Map Parts – Efficient and effective use of repeating topics

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

Have you used Map Parts in Mindjet / MindManager for Windows? With just a little bit of effort you can be very efficient and effective when working with repeated use of topics.  The product comes with some useful ones: Days of the week, Ideas, Issues and Messages. Each Map Part has a parent topic and several sub topics.  When you click them they are added to the map at the selected topic.  They are very useful in meetings. Someone makes a suggestion, add a map part and start capturing the details within a defined structure.

Map Parts are easy to create.  Select the parent topic of the group you would like to be a Map Part and then click Add Selected Topic(s) in the Map Part pane. Your Map Part is now part of the library and can be added to any open map with a click.

I have two Map Parts I use frequently:

Map Part Virtual Boardroom

Virtual Boardroom

At a monthly meeting with a group of business friends we present an issue for discussion by the group.  I use the map part as a template for each person’s issue. As we progress around the table I add this map part for each issue. Then I use the topics as prompts for questions and recording the discussions.  At the end of the meeting it is easy to share the map as a whole or relevant sections to the person with the issue.

Signature MindManager Mindjet Map Part

Signature

I use this map part to add a floating topic to a map I am going to publish. It has a hyperlink back to my web site. I have other map parts with full contact details.Map Parts can have all the elements you use in a map. You could have a map part which contains attachments e.g. terms and conditions, office location map, feedback form, expenses spreadsheet.  You could have a map part which links to the parent maps in a project or process or the folder where the project documents are stored.

More Time Savers

There are more sophisticated map parts which will:

  • Search the web, Amazon or eBay for you and bring back the top X results.
  • Display the recent topics from an RSS feed
  • Add links to Files and or Folders on your PC

Set aside some time to see how you could use Map Parts to make you more effective and efficient with Mindjet MindManager.

Making the Most of LinkedIn and Thinking Space

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

I am experimenting at the moment with the Thinking Space app for the Android Smartphones. An HTC Wildfire in my case. It allows you make maps and save them in MindManager xmmap file format. It will also import xmmap (it’s one of the MindManager save options) within reason.

This evening I went to a presentation in a very pleasent new hall in the Hampshire County Council offices in Winchester organised by Wired Wessex.  I decided to leave my Tablet PC behind and map the event on my phone.  Not an easy thing for me to do. :)

The presentation was given by Stephen Dann a veteran of LinkedIn and a very professional user of the platform.  Using Thinking Space presented two problems for me: 1. I am still learning the UI. 2. You have to be concise. You can’t type in a phrase quickly enough.  Here is the result which  you can make appear by magic in the My Pictures folder of my Tablet PC.

Stephen Dann - How to make the most of LinkedIn

Then I opened the Thinking Space file from the folder in my smartphone via Bluetooth and edited it in MindManager.  The unusual thing about Stephen’s presentation was that he used presentation mode with MindManager 7.  There was a lot of talk about groups but Stephen is not a member of those groups.  So I have added links to them to this map and some expansion on the topics in the original.  You would be very welcome Stephen.

Is the phone and Thinking Space better than pen and paper? Yes if you want to publish to Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, WordPress quickly or export to MindManager. No it is not as fluid.

Is the phone and Thinking Space better than MindManager in Ink mode on the Tablet PC. No but it does weigh a lot less and I cycled the 8 miles to Winchester.

Here is Stephen’s PowerPoint version of the presentation as 10 second per slide silent video. Change to 720p resolution and full screen for clearer slides.

Connecting People with MindManager

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

Last night I met with an ex Unilever colleague in Gulidford who had recently returned from 20ish years working in Europe for various companies in Operations and Supply Chain. We had not been face to face for twenty years. It was a very comfortable discussion over a pint of beer. During the evening I mentioned several groups and people he could contact.

He will be getting a map like this very shortly with slightly more info than you can see as a clickable web page. It was very quick to construct with MindManager just dragging and dropping links from various web pages and using the Outlook MindManager contact buttons. In my friends version the Outlook panels are open and he will get an outline version as well, so he can copy and paste information to his “database”.

MindManager is brilliant at doing this.  I will also supply him with a  link to the MindManager 8 Mac and the orginal map.

Mindjet MindManager Road Show London

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

First it was good to meet a variety of virtual and real aquaintances. Bill Creekbaum, Director Product Management, Mindjet for breakfast. Then Chris Harman, Director NEWS Region, Mindjet; Rachel Reid & James Fletcher, Mindjet UK and several of their MindManager coaches. Plus my old MindManager user friend Doug Witt and my new ones Liam Hughes, Biggerplate and Adrian Griffith, Oval Business Solutions. Finally several of the attendees whose business cards I have or they have mine. I will reconnect with you next week or while on the train back from Birmingham to Winchester tomorrow.

What did I learn? A lot from Bill Creekbaum. I have posted my map of his presentation about “MM9 overview and Product demonstration” before I started mine! Bill took us enthusiastically through the new features of MindManager 9 and gave us some insight into the future rapid development programme for MindManager. We saw the new planning and presentation tools in MindManager 9 in some detail. We brainstormed our way to a plan for an Olympic Party and discovered Bill’s beer preferences on route. (I will be pleased to test those this evening). He showed how the new Silde mode can be used. A target for the 9.1 service pack was revealed as October. Local Mindjet Player file generation will return and there will be user demanded improvements to the slide and planning tools.

Emma Thomas from Creative SharePoint took us through their application of MindManager. It was great to hear another enthusiast talk about their benefits of using MindManager. Particularly applying it to web site and SharePoint structures to capture and give feedback on the user requirements of the client.

I had fun delivering my interactive session. They were impressed by Tablet PC and MindManager combination which allowed me to go from ink to a web page in 30 minutes. Then the audience choose to look at Inspiration and Management from four topics I proposed. It was good to hear of people using MindManager in personnel processes such as appraisal, recuritment and induction. During the management part, Adrian contributed his companies weekly process for planning based on having a map of each persons tasks, resources and issues for the week.

Chris Harman gave us the big picture and pricing changes. I think Mindjet is going to maintain its dominant role in business mind mapping sector and looks to become more relevant to the educational sector as well.

More about the Road Show tomorrow.

If you were there, what did you take away?

3 Days Left to Enter the MindManager 9 License competition

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Your best chance is in the LinkedIn and Facebook surveys. There are 4 licenses up for grabs online, one in each of the surveys outlined MindManager 9 License Competitions.

Is it worth 5 minutes of your time?  Here is a Google search of MindManager 9 reviews.  It will probably take you longer to read a few of these than enter one of the competitions.  Your chances of winning the £244 inc VAT license are currently better than 1 in 100!  That is the UK price but the license can be used in any country.

If you win the license you can give it away but I need to know the end user.  Perhaps a student would find it useful for researching or your aunty for doing genealogy research or your business partner for working with you.

If you are a Mac guy you could run the license in Parallels or give it to one of your frustrated PC user friends.

Good luck

A overview of MindManager User Groups

Friday, August 13th, 2010

I am sure I have done this before but its time for a new one.  This overview links to a survey about MindManager user groups on line and some research for potential user group meetings in the UK. Everyone is welcome to complete the survey especially as you can answer a question which may win you a MindManager 9 Windows license.  You will find the survey below the map.
