Creating linked information maps for the web with MindManager

Friday, December 16th, 2011

This week I have worked on a  job for a client creating a set of web pages which are maps of links for different topic areas. The maps are now on the web and visible to his global group of collaborators.  Unfortunately he does want me to share the maps publically but I thought I would remind you (as I did for myself when doing this) or inform you for the first time about customising the clickable image map web export.  The process below is not complete and assumes some knowledge of the MindManager web exports and HTML.

  • Structure: An index map with links to child maps.
  • Copy the Clickable Image Map web export template folder and give it a new relevant name.
  • Create the child maps first.
    • Drag and drop the favicon next to the URL of the required web page, from your browser to the map. This will create a topic with the link, the title text of the web page and the favicon
    • When you have all the required links, arrange and format the map to suit the purpose. You can save this as a Style to use with the next child.
    • Save the child map in map folder for this project.
    • Create a sub-folder where all the web exports will be saved.
    • Export the map using the NEW clickable image map web export. Enter the folder path for the above folder and use a unique name (e.g. the topic name without no spaces) for the Root Export File Name for each map.
    • Repeat this for all the child/topic maps.  Save them all to the same folder.
  • Example index mapCreate the Parent or Index map by dragging the *.html files of the Child maps to the Index map.
    • Note: I used floating topics and hid the hyperlink icon.
    • Format and arrange as required. Try and make this a compact map.
    • Save to the same folder as the child maps.
    • Export the Index map using the clickable image export to the same folder as the other web exports.
    • If you open the index.html with your browser the links to the child web exports won’t work! Open the index.html with a text editor and search and replace “../” with nothing. Save. Reload index.html and it should work now.
  • Edit the ImgmapPage.htm in your new template
    • Add the opening <body> below the </head> tag (It had gone AWOL in mine. So you might want to do that in the original one as well)
    • Open the index.html file. Copy the text from <!–START CLICKABLE IMAGEMAP–> to <!–END CLICKABLE IMAGEMAP–>.
    • Paste this into the ImgmapPage.htm after <body>
    • Save
  • Example with mapRun all the child map web exports again and they will have an index map at the top.
  • Check that it works.
  • Transfer all the contents of web export folder to a folder on your web server and it should work there as well.

The complete ImgmapPage.htm should have this structure:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN”
<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv=”Content-Type” content=”text/html; charset=%WebExport.CharacterSet%”>
<title>%CustomParameter.PageTitle%</title>
</head>
<body>
<!–START CLICKABLE IMAGEMAP–>
html from index.html
<!–END CLICKABLE IMAGEMAP–>
<!– Command: Expand(“Imgmap.mmbas”) –>
</body>
</html>

Using more html you can:

  • Add <div> tags with CSS style commands you can position the index map.
  • Add some text to the header alongside the index map
  • Add a footer.

The basis of the map is the GetClicky web stats package I run on the blog. The ranking is based on the number of views each blog had during 2010.  You can click the map and view the blogs.

No surprise that an iPad comparison was at No. 2 but why all the interest in OneNote and MindManager?

Since the beginning of the year I have been Tweeting the results.  The map was created using a News Feed Map Part using an RSS feed from a Twitter Search for Applications of MindManager Top 10. I replaced the “atom” with “rss” from the “Feed for this query” URL on the Twitter Search results and pasted this in to the new map part I created.  Twitter only picked up Nos. 1 to 7 (it only goes back so far) and a Google Twitter search only picked up the No. 10 (it has not indexed the more recent tweets. So 8-10 were added manually!  Click the Map Part Call Out to download and this map part.  You can download the map by clicking the Central Topic.

What will be popular in 2011?  Tablet PCs, iPad, Android, SharePoint, Catalyst ……….

Resolving problems with customised web exports in MindManager 9

Monday, September 27th, 2010

I have not been able to use customised web exports which were working in MindManager 8 and earlier versions in MindManager 9.  Which is a bit of a blow because I publish a new web page or site via MindManager most days, ConferenceREACTION event record pages being one example.  Copying the folders from your MindManager 8 web templates to the MindManager 9 templates is not enough.

Here is the answer:
Replace this string
‘#Reference {A41FC8F5-ED0F-4333-9843-51C0539B19D3}#4.0#0#C:\Program Files\Mindjet\MindManager 8\Mm5WebExport.dll#Mm5WebExport 4.0 Type Library
With this string
‘#Reference {F2454FB8-64C3-48fe-B0DD-E7EDEA107825}#5.0#0#C:\Program Files\Mindjet\MindManager 9\Mm5WebExport.dll#Mm5WebExport 5.0 Type Library
in all .mmbas and .cls files
I use Useful File Utilities -Batch Replacer with this RTBL file UpdateCustomWebExports to do this for each web export template folder.

If you would like me to update any web export folders for you, please zip up to five  folders and email them to me. I will send you a PayPal invoice for £7.99 inc VAT in the UK and the same price for all other countries.  On receipt of payment I will return the updated files. If you have more than 5 folders to process please send an inquiry email for a price.

An alternative process may be to copy the .mmbas and .cls files from MindManager 9 to your related customised folder.  You could do that with File Explorer.

This was my process of elimination to find the source of the problem.

  • I have a map which has exported via the clickable image template successfully.
  • I have made a copy (COPY 1) which also exports successfully
  • I have a customised template which works in MindManager 8
  • I have copied the four edited .xml files to COPY1 and the export works
  • Stopped this copy and test route and went to file compare
  • Comparing MindManager 8 clickable image template folder with MindManager 9 using Total Commander 7.50 shows all mmbas files are different in content. Opening identical files in Notepda++ and using Compare utility show first line is different.
    And its obvious why.
  • ‘#Reference {F2454FB8-64C3-48fe-B0DD-E7EDEA107825}#5.0#0#C:\Program Files\Mindjet\MindManager 9\Mm5WebExport.dll#Mm5WebExport 5.0 Type Library

  • But this is a comment! Perhaps not.
  • The reference is the same in all mmbas files in the original folder
  • Does replacing them in a custom export template solve the problem? Time to use Useful File Utilities – Batch Replacer
to change the reference in my “old” template to the new reference.
  • It did for 48 out of the 54 files. What is different for the other six?
  • They are tables of parameter names and other files specific for my customised export.
  • Time to try it out.
  • Failed at the BeginExport.mmbas ???
  • Copy MindManager 8 “Clickable Image” folder to MindManager 9 web templates renamed to “Clickable Image ex 8″
  • Run the search and replace on the .mmbas files and the web export works!
  • More investigation of my custom export template required
  • First let me try one of my simpler custom web export
  • Tried and failed. Ran the search and replace on all files. The reference is also include *.cls files.
  • Ran simple custom web export. SUCCESS!
  • Ran Search and Replace on more complex web export. Ran export and SUCCESS!

Mindjet MindManager 9 Road Show – Manchester

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

My final Road Show of the tour.  Good choice for the venue Rachael, Manchester United’s boardroom.  Yes, we did get to see the football field and the red terraces.  Click the photo to see that those extra goalposts have a growing purpose.

Manchester United - Old Trafford Football Stadium
Twitter scored two goals this morning. Someone outside of the meeting spotted two of us twittering from within and told us . Which provided me with the ice breaker, “Mike Thomas (aka @thomasmike) please identify yourself”.  Secondly Pascal Venier (aka @pascalvenier) noticed halfway through the morning that we were a couple of miles away from him, so I invited him to join us and he jumped in a taxi. Good to meet you Pascal.

I had spoken on the phone to Peter Maddern (aka @speechem) a few years ago. It was good to meet him face to face and learn a bit more about speech recognition.  He took particular interest in using MindManager with a Tablet PC and posed the question “Can you use MindManager with a graphics tablet in ink mode?” The answer is yes and we worked out how the following day.  For Windows 7 go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and in the left hand colum click “Turn Windows features on or off”.  Tick the Tablet PC components.  This works with Wacom graphics tablets and maybe others.  Vista has something similar.  I can’t find any references to achieving in XP but I believe it was possible with some registry hacking.

Steven Bashford, Senior Product Manager, Mindjet, Germany took the main role for Mindjet.  He lead the group through the improvements and changes in MindManager 9.  He dwelt on the Gantt view, Outlook parts and Slide view giving the audience time to ask questions and dealing with their concerns.  He even told a joke but we all agreed it didn’t work and he should try it again tomorrow in Dublin.  Did it work, Steven?

Here is my map of Bill Creekbaum’s version of the same session “MindManager 9 Overview and Product Demonstration“. I mapped it in ink on MindManager with my Tablet PC, converted it to text, added styles, links and published it to the internet within an hour of Bill’s session ending.

James Hoggett of Contact and Code repeated his overview of SharePoint and MindManager Explorer for SharePoint from the Birmingham Road Show.  Must get that link to the free SharePoint server and look at the polling (survey) tool in SharePoint that James mentioned. James provided these links : The free version of SharePoint 2010 foundation is available for download here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=49c79a8a-4612-4e7d-a0b4-3bb429b46595&displaylang=en. Probably a better solution is to use the full SharePoint 2010 VHD (Virtual Hard Drive i.e. a SharePoint sever running virtually on your PC) that Microsoft have provided on a trial basis here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=751fa0d1-356c-4002-9c60-d539896c66ce&displaylang=en

There was some good news and some bad news during the morning.

Bad news: Outlook parts no longer track the contact, email, task or note if they are moved in Outlook e.g. to another folder. Pity, I enjoyed demonstrating that working in previous versions.  Mindjet have changed to a different process for linking/integrating with Outlook which is more reliable and uses less processor time.

Good news: I have nearly mastered the slide viewer.  Big tip: Do not include too much on a slide or open up topics with large numbers of sub topics e.g. a Google map part with 10 sub topics.  Create extra slides which focus on details.  I will publish the map I used for my presentation after I have tidied up and remove links to pages I don’t want you to access on my PC :) .  In the mean time here is a Mindjet Player version I upload during one of my presentations “Turning Ideas into Accessible Information

Neutral news: The slide frame in the slide view is the same size as the paper selected in the Page Setup (Slides).  The default is likely to be A4. Some printers will give you more page sizes than others and even a custom size. It may be worth chaning your default printer and playing with different page sizes, if slides do not fill your screen.  May cause problems, if your last print job was to DL Envelopes!

Must get back to encouraging people to update to MindManager 9 prior to the 30th September  launch discount deadline.  Two orders arrived on the day of this Road Show, one via LinkedIn and the second via Ecademy.

A summary of the three TV Debates by Leader

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Just before I go off to vote here is my summary of each leaders’ statements in the three Election debates:

Gordon Brown – Labour

David Cameron – Conservative

Nick Clegg – Liberal Democrat

A combination of these debates and my interactions with the local candidates in Winchester has made my voting decision easy.  I had better go and do the deed now.

Do these mind maps help you?

The MindManager versus iMindMap Election Debate

Friday, April 30th, 2010

I am still a novice at using iMindMap, perhaps 40-60 hours on the job. I have been using MindManager most days since 1996.  So comparing the products is quite difficult for me.  I am pre-programmed to use MindManager.  Anyway I thought there is only way to see if iMindMap works for me and that is to give it the 90 minute debate test!  I covered the first priministerial debate with MindManager and the second with MindMeister.  Here is how iMindMap performed.

Once you get used to the Speed Mapping mode, it performs as well as  MindManager with some occasional blips but they could be operator error. Definitely more reliable than MindMeister (but it’s an online tool).  So recording the debate was relatively easy.  As with the other debates I set mains branches and people for 8 blank questions and the statements.  With the appropriate colour coding. I made a deliberate choice to use CAPITALS only.   I did not have the fluidity to make corrections on the fly as I do with MindManager.  Dragging branches is not the same.  No red shadow as per MindManager.  Then the real differences begin.

I deliberately did not want to replicate the linear layout of MindManager and choose the organic setting for Speed Mapping.  This leaves a considerable white space on the map. Good for reading on a A3 sheet but not for maximising the content in a browser screen.  So the result you see below took another hour or two of tweeking post debate to get the best I can achieve.  MindManager has the advantage of global settings that can be applied to topics with regard to vertical and horizontal spacing etc.  This allows you to make instant changes to the topic density on the map.

The result is definitely more organic than a MindManager map.

  • Is it easier to read?
  • Is it more memorable?
  • Is it more stimulating?
  • What do you think?

Third UK Election Debate – 29 April 2010 – BBC

Web Page Notes

1. The header,  footer and general layout are produced by a MindManager web export template Cabre created.

2. The iMindMap is an exported PNG image, converted to GIF, reduced to 90% of original size to speed up page loading and then added to the HTML.

3. The indented text outline is cut from the iMindMap web export of the map with some CSS editing to adjust the styles to work outside of an iframe.  This is a significant plus point of the iMindMap web export. The text on your map images can then be seen by Google et al.

So you may not be able to do this at home !)

Printing with MindManager

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

A recurring frustration with MindManager is that users cannot produce print outs with the font sizes that match those shown in the Format Font ribbon or pop up pane. The rule you have to remember in printing with MindManager is that it will fill the sheet you print it to. The printed font depends upon:

  • The sheet size A4 A3 Letter etc.
  • The size of the margins
  • The aspect ratio of your map and the sheet orientation (landscape or portrait) e.g. Wide and short maps will have smaller text on a portrait sheet compared to a landscape sheet

What action can you take to increase the font size on the printed map?

  • Split the map up into several maps: Select a topic > Right click > Send to new linked map
  • Print main topics: Print range > Primary selected topic
  • Use the poster printing option “Scaling” in the Print Map pop up
  • Decrease the margins, remove the border and, header and footer
  • Alter the aspect ratio
    • Change the default width of your topics.  Wide topics work well in landscape, narrow in portrait: Right click a topic > Format Topic > Size and Margins >Adjust Preferred width > Style > Save as New Style Default
    • Adjust topic width manually: Drag the edges of the topic.
    • Use the Tree Growth Direction to tuck sub topics under their parent topic
    • Reduce the inter topic spacing: Select parent or central topic, Right Click > Format Topic > Subtopics Layout > Distance from parent and Distance between siblings. Click Style (bottom right of this window) and Save as New Style Default
    • You have more control over Main Topic position if you drag them by the pin where the line from the Central Topic joins the Main Topic
Printing with MindManager

Use Print Range and Scaling to control printed font size

Print set up with MindManager

Use Page Setup (Map Print) to remove header, footer, border and adjust margins

A MindManager map of Simon Campbell CEO of ViaPost’s presentation to Entrepreneurs World

Monday, March 2nd, 2009
Last Wednesday I attended the Central London meeting of Entrepreneurs World. They provide a forum for entrepreneurs and investors to meet regularly. At their meetings there is a guest presenter and for this meeting Simon Campbell told us about ViaPost. This new product enables you post a document from your PC and have delivered to your addressee as printed paper for 27p!

Some notes about use of MindManager before you visit the full size page:

  • This is a modified clickable image export with the header and footer cut and paste from the static outline export.
  • I have also added three new customisable fields: Meta Tags for Alt Title,  Description and Keywords to make the web page more Google friendly. Read my tip: Adding Meta Tags to MindManager Web Exports
  • I must add another two: The meeting owner and their URL.  I am post export editing the HTML at the moment.
