Mindjet Connect – Has it got enough oomph?

As a long term user of MindManager I expect new products to be as useful as the ones I have been using since 1996. It’s a high threshold!

Mindjet Connect enables collaboration but lacks features that I use regularly. So is it worth the effort when you only have access via the browser interface? If you use it via MindManager 2012 many of my issues go away.

There are major benefits to using Mindjet Connect:

  • Shared folders and files with read/write access settings
  • Editing via any browser anywhere
  • Archiving/version control
  • Simpler to use than the desktop product

BUT there are significant functions missing e.g.

Tips

  • You can have multiple maps and file manager windows open. Right Click a map in the Files Window to Open in a New Window (Tab)
  • Beware renaming maps and folders that are open in other windows or tabs.
  • Maximise your screen
    • Full screen your browser
    • And click the full window button top right of Connect screen

Frustrations

  • The map goes off line every few minutes for 30 seconds. This disables editing.
    • You can continue working in MindManager 2012 but not the browser
    • The regular save is not a problem
  • There is only one short cut key that I have found. I only use half a dozen but without them rate of use goes down:
    • e.g. No Ctrl-F5 to fit the map to the screen
    • But Ctrl-Shift-D will toggle the level of detail

Pleasant Surprises

  • The UI is fast and easy to use. Right click to get more options

  1. Really helpful review, Andrew. Thank you.

I like the simpler appearance though I get a bit frustrated trying to select branches and move them around, and there’s something missing in the insert topic area that I struggle with too.

    Cheers, Graham.

thanks for this great article I have plenty of things to say about Connect…
There are various buggs!!! I often connect to Connect on the cloud version where are my collaborator uses its desktop application. Nor him nor me can see the other one connected to the map. This means that every change the other does won’t be taken into account!!!! Pretty annoying when the MindJet slogan is “Turn ideas into actions” and “Help people work in teams” well….. really??
Plus I’m on a mac computer and my collaborators are on PC so they use the desktop application. It is regular that when i modify and save a map they can’t open it any more, read and modify it…. Then I have to create a new map on my MindManager software paste the existing map, save it and then upload the NEW map on Connect. A lot of time lost and i think it is really annoying! Catalyst was long but at least it worked! (I know they need some time to implemente and develop a perfect software or application but let’s be honest its been 5 months more or less….)

Sorry if it is not really the topic! To respond to your question I kind of like Connect (if the buggs were solved) I also think its a bad thing not to be able to copy and past branches from an other map. The icon problem is also disturbing. But i think MindJet is on the good path and I guess they will keep improving it!
    Regards
    Raphaelle

    Hi Raphelle

As with all products there is a balance between releasing something which is not totally satisfying and getting into the market place to test it for real. With Connect being a Cloud product you expect there to be rapid small updates, resolving problems incrementally rather than waiting for a big release. Lets hope that saving and accessing maps, and change visibility is top of the list for resolution in the near future.

    Hi Graham

    Thank you.

Yes, you expect that tapping the map near a topic will insert a new topic connected to that topic but you get a floating topic. I like selecting topics and pressing insert! I find moving topics works, when you let your mind accept that the program will position the topic, all you have control over is, is what it is connected to or not. Holding shift down when you move (and not releasing it until after you lrelease the mouse button) will produce a floating topic.
